DESCRIPTION
Winner (1st prize) of the architectural competition to design a library in dialogue with an existing barracks building, set in a park that has been the neighborhood's social hub for at least half a century. The proposal lifts the books into the air, to occupy the minimum space in the park and create unobstructed sight lines in many directions. The proposal offers a vision for subsequent phases of park development. A courtyard and a terrace, larger than requested, are two public spaces accessible to all and by all means of active travel. Rainwater management on the site is designed to meet the most stringent LEED certification objectives. In keeping with the competition's mandate, and in a broader context that takes into account an integrated landscape strategy for the project's surroundings, extending into the park and the public right-of-way of rue Hibernia.
